Grade/Subject: EIP: Reading
State Standard Met: This plan idea is inspired by specific learning standards ELA2R3, ELA2W1, ELA2LSV1 on Georgia Standards site (http://www.georgiastandards.org/).
Topic Objective: 1. The student will develop a positive attitude towards himself/herself as a unique and worthy person. 2. The student will demonstrate cooperative behavior in groups. 3. The student will demonstrate how to communicate with each other.
Positive Label Program Relevance: Objective of positive attitude and being cooperative is relevant to Positive Label Program.
Materials Needed: Paper, Pencil, Book: Chicken Soup for Little Souls, writing journal
Procedure/Activity: 1. TTW discuss uniqueness, that each student has special gifts, talents, and abilities that make them special. 2. TTW discuss the importance of showing appreciation for others, and how that contributes to making their classroom a positive place for learning. 3. TSW interact and share/connect with comments made by the teacher. 4. After the discussion, explain to the students that they are going to play a game similar to 7UP. 5. TTW select 5 students to stand up. The other students will put their heads down, close their eyes, and put their thumbs up. TTW ask questions from the list which follows, having each other volunteer select a student who displays the quality asked for. The students that are standing in the front of the room will quietly tiptoe and gently touch the thumb of the chosen student. Student then guess who picked them, taking their place as a colunteer if they guess correctly. The teach may remind students that they don't have to be best friends with someone to recognize their good qualities, and encourage them to really think about who in their class displays the given qualities. 6. Here is a list that may be adapted for your particular needs:
1) Go to a student who is kind to others
2) Go to a student who share with you
3) Go to a student who has a good sense of humor
4) Go to a student who works hard in school

12) Go to a person who is helpful
13) Go to a person who you would like to say "thank you" to or "I'm sorry"
14) Go to a person who smiles a lot.
Instructions: 1. The student will display understanding by their participation in discussion and complimenting classmates in other situations during the day. 2. The student will collect journal responses as an assessment tool, looking to see if there is an understanding of positive feelings towrads others and how it impacts their learning community. 3. TTW discuss after the game is played how they felt if they were or were not chosen, and how it made them feel to choose others. 4. TSW ask questions of those who chose them if they choose to do so. 5. TTW ask the students why some students were picked more often--most students will make the connection that by displaying qualities such as helpfulness, sharing, responsibility or friendliness they become more popular.
