Grade/Subject: 5th Grade: Math
State Standard Met: This plan is inspired by specific math learning standards on Georgia Standards site (http://www.georgiastandards.org/). Students will speak and listen to others in small and large group settings.
Topic Objective: Students will learn the names (spelling and pronunciation) of all 91 students in fifth grade. This is useful because a name is important and fosters new friendships.
Positive Label Program Relevance: Learning someone's name makes them feel important and that supports the program.
Materials Needed: Have students bring in yearbooks from 2005-2006. Paper, Pencil, Rosters.
Procedure/Activity: 1. Use yearbooks, have students begin to put names with faces. 2. Teach mnemonic devices to help students with first and last name recognition. 3. Play to adjective name game to help students learn more about the students in his/her homeroom. 4. Provide rosters with all 91 names spelled correctly. 5. Have students practice the spellings as students pronounce their first and last names. 6. Have students write names phonetically 7. Have students create and then complete a student scavenger hunt. 8. Have students create seating charts that reveal the first and last names of students sitting in each class. This will be all 91 students. Have students sign and decorate the "I Know all 91 of You" Graffiti Board. Hang bulletin board paper near the Wanted Posters.
Instructions: Be sure to erase names from student rosters if parents did not give permission for "child's name to be published." Information Student Tips: Have students introduce themselves to 10 people they have not talked to this week. Students will create seating charts to reveal the names of all 91 fifth graders. Reinforce mnemonic devices for improving memory with names. Have students study and write the names of the students who are not yet memorized.
