Topic Objective: Students will learn about positive character traits and how to establish and set goals. To identify the positive character qualities needed to accomplish an amazing challenge. To improve academic self concept. To display a positive interest in learning. To establish challenging academic goals. Have the seven summits website on the TV screen before the lesson. Use sticky notes to identify the seven highest mountain peaks on each continent.

Materials Needed: Making the Link Worksheet 2.5, pg. 63 "Can't Jump to the Top of the Ladder" story, pg. 54-55, pencil
Procedure/Activity: 1. Tell about Hugh Morton, who has climed the highest mountain peak on seven continents. 2. Using a world map and slide show view the seven summits. Discuss the continents and countries where the highest mountains are located. 3. Draw character cards out of a book bag and discuss the character traits that Mr. Morton possessed such as: positive attitude, perseverance, hard-worker, brave, self discipline, courage, cooperation, confidence, commitment, etc. 4. Write quote on board: "Goals are Dreams with Deadlines." Ask students to explain what it means. What if you change the word deadlines to directions- does the meaning make more sense, explain? Discuss how deadlines and directions help us reach our goals. Ask students to define goals and share personal examples. Be sure to help them distinguish short-term and long-term goals. Draw a ladder on the board, and number it from the bottom rung to the top, then read and discuss the story, "Can't Jump to the Top of the Ladder." Ask for a school-based example of a goal (complete all homework this week, do my class work today, use my agenda, etc.) and write on the top of the ladder and then list the steps that would be necessary to accomplish this goal on each of the rungs, beginning at the bottom. 5. Students will complete the worksheet on developing their own goal and step by step instructions.
Instructions: Student will be able to identify character traits needed to accomplish a goal. Students will be able to distinguish between short and long term goals. Students will be able to describe the steps to reach a goal.
