Grade/Subject: 3rd: All Subjects

State Standard Met: This plan is inspired by specific learning standars QCCH3.10 on Georgia Standards site (http://www.georgiastandards.org)

Topic Objective: Students will learn how to deal with difficult situations about name calling with their peers.

Positive Label Program Relevance: Use of Casey Good Finder book as starting point to encourage like this one that teacher builds bridge for Casey to Maggie.

Materials Needed: Paper, Pencil, Muggie Maggie book

Procedure/Activity: The student will write a friendly letter to a book character about how to deal with difficult situations with name calling. Students must have completed reading Muggie Maggie before this lesson. As a class, discuss making connections with the book. Allow students to work in small groups to discuss any connections they made with the book. Next, discuss connections with other tests. Have students share as a whole group any connections made between Maggie and Casey. Discuss situations from Muggie Maggie that made Maggie feel like she did not belong. Students will write a friendly letter to Maggie about how she should handle a situation from the book.

Instructions: Allow students time to create their role play activity. The teacher needs to have an awareness for students that may be reluctant to participate. The teacher should encourage, but not demand, that all kids participate. As a class, discuss feelings of getting in front of a group to present information. Discuss strategies as a class to overcome these feelings.
