State Standard Met: This plan idea is inspired by specific learning stands on Georgia Standards site (http://www.georgiastandards.org/) Character Ed. 1.13 (Respect for self through accountability of actions and their consequences); 1.14 (Respect for self through achievement og goals through good self-esteem); 1.15 (Respect for self through maintaining good work ethic.)

Top Objective: Students will identify things that affect their attitudes and determine which things can and cannot be changed. They will learn that by changing things that cause negative attitudes, they can be in control of their own attitudes.

Positive Label Program Relevance: Qualities respect, hard-work, responsibility.

Procedure/Activity: After discussing and listing things that affect attitude, read the book "A Color of His Own," by Leo Lionni. Discuss whether or not colors have an affect on your attitude. Share with the students personal stories about how different colors make you feel when you wear them. Also, point out that seeing that color in someone else may not affect your feelings in the same way. Students will return to their seats and write about "Choices." ("My choices affect my attitude. I can choose things to make me ______ or _____. I can choose to be me because I'm _______ and _______.")

Instructions: Explain to the students that choosing the colors they wear is one of many choices they make every day. Just as they choose colors that make them feel good about themselves, they also make other choices every day that affect how they feel about themselves. Be careful not to use so much water that the colors blend together. More water make the colors lighter.

This lesson needs to be divided into two session. Reading the story, discussions, and water coloring should be done the first session. Writing and share their writing should be done in the second session.
